Day 4/31 of the May Study Challenge!! 🍃✨

4. May is AP Exam season! What are your tips for studying for tests?

Studying tips… good question… here are a few of my favourites!! 🌟

• try to normally focus on the things that you are weakest at - don’t just revise things that you’re good at since (obviously) you won’t make as much progress if really any at all!!

• try the ‘blurting’ technique: this is where you select a topic, write it on a page and then write down everything you know about that topic… then, using a different colour, write on the parts that you didn’t remember using your notes/textbooks and focus on learning these parts

• practice questions - whether they’re from old specifications, past papers, workbooks, current specifications, different exam boards… if you can find questions relevant to the topics you’re studying - do them! & look at the mark scheme afterwards and make sure you know what the key phrases are to include for that type of question

• learn your definitions!! - whether it’s through quizlet, paper flashcards or repetition to another person… please learn definitions and vocabulary - sometimes these questions can be worth say 3 marks for a more complicated one (in a level chemistry) and they are easy marks if you have learnt them all!

• for essays: make sure that you eventually practise timed essays… to start with, it’s not a huge deal as you’re getting used to the style of question (etc.), but when nearing exam season, try and do some in timed conditions so that you can work out how much time you have to do a brief plan and how much you then expect yourself to write - if wider reading/listening links are necessary, make sure to include them, and when checking your essay (not in editing time), I’d recommend highlighting them and adding them to a list

• summary sheets - for the topics you find difficult/all topics if you have time, try to condense a chapter into say a side of A4 or A3 paper with the key phrases and concepts as well as links when necessary - this will make the important parts of obvious to you

• actively revise - don’t just read notes/revision guides all the time (passive revision) - instead test your recall skills through question practice, blurting or reciting to say a family member

• finally, make sure that you take breaks… (and have water with you to stay hydrated!!) I find that I revise best if I take short breaks (5 mins) every so often (couple of hours or so…), but also if I try to change subject fairly often to vary my revision - little and often is key for me for helping things to sink in, but when I’m revising I can revise for relatively long periods of time without breaks… but take time out and make sure that you allow yourself time to relax/go out with friends/go to a rehearsal (etc.) - your physical and mental health should always be your priority

And always remember to believe in yourself - you can do it… I believe in you!! 💗🌷🍃
